Emerald Isle

Our next trip is Ireland in September. Google Maps has been a knob and not let me put the entire route on one map, so here it is in pieces.

Part 1: Dublin through to Connemara

Part 2: Connemara through to Cork

Part 3: Cork through to Dublin

I make that near enough 1750km. Yeah... And once again, I still can't drive, so Claire and Gemma are going to share and we have to plan so that Claire doesn't have to drive after going on any boats.

Itinerary currently looks like this:
  • 5th September: Fly into Dublin - me and Gemma from Manchester, Claire from Birmingham. Go and explore Dublin.
  • 6th September: More exploration of Dublin - museums, parks, other cool things. NO GUINNESS.
  • 7th September: Pick up the car. Head up to Belfast via the Hill of Tara and Bru na Boinne. Exploration of Belfast?
  • 8th September: Brave the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. Once recovered from vertigo, head on up the coast to the Giant's Causeway. Remember that currency has switched back to stirling, not euro. Stay overnight at Derry/Londonderry.
  • 9th September: Walk the city walls of Derry/Londonderry, then head back into the Republic of Ireland and admire the pretties of Donegal. Drive on out to Malinbeg and take in the awesome views.
  • 10th September: Drive back into Northern Ireland to visit the Marble Arch Caves, then back across the border to stay the night in County Sligo.
  • 11th September: Head cross country through Sligo, Mayo and Galway to reach Connemara. Stop Zoe from freaking out over Connemara ponies. Possible activities include kayaking, snorkelling or surfing.
  • 12th September: Drive the coast road from Connemara to Galway. Explore County Galway and enjoy Galway's apparently famous nightlife.
  • 13th September: Epic day of driving on the Wild Atlantic Way, taking in the Burren, the matchmaking festival at Lisdoonvarna and the Cliffs of Moher. Follow the Wild Atlantic Way and take the ferry across the Shannon near Kilrush. Spend the night in Tralee.
  • 14th September: Explore the Dingle Peninsula via the Conor Pass. Possibly enjoy the Dingle Trad Fest if it's on?
  • 15th September: Toddle on down to Killarney and go riding in Killarney National Park. Stay overnight (probably) at the Dunloe View Hostel. Farm animals are apparently a top feature...
  • 16th September: Pootle across country to Cork, through the mountains as in this song 'ere. I will be blasting this. Maybe... if no one stops me... And then go kayaking at twilight around Cork. Woo.

  •  17th September: Head out to sea on a whale-watching trip in the morning. In the afternoon, head inland via Cashel to spend the night in Kilkenny. There may be singing of "It's a long way to Tipperary" as we just nip through the very edge of the county.
  • 18th September: Explore Kilkenny then drive up to the Wicklow Mountains and explore around Glendalough. Possibly stay in Glendalough or head north towards Dublin and stay outside the city.
  • 19th September: Drive to the airport, deposit the probably by this point well-loved car and fly out of the country. Then the inevitable train journey home wishing we were already back in Ireland. Probably. I hope.
